Permanent or Semi Permanent? Pro's and Con's........

It sounds like permanent would be the better choice right? Well not always, semi-permanent is getting it's turn in the spotlight and here is how to know what one is for you.

PRO'S- CON'S-

-Permanent color will cover gray 100% -Hair may have a line of demarcation, a line where you see where the
color grows out.

-Permanent color has the ability to LIFT hair color -Color may be drying for hair if used on ends of hair
(make it lighter)

-Semi-Permanent color will camouflage gray -You cannot lift the natural hair color, it may be used for deposit only
but may have the ability to cover from 70-100%

-Semi Permanent color is more gentle on hair and
is commonly suggested for women that are pregnant

These are just a few major tips I use to explain the difference to my clients. Keep this in mind if you are questioning yourself as to what is better for you!

Everyone thinks they have the key to gorgeous healthy hair. But what are the most important things you need to know in order to have the best hair around? Let's get back to basics and start from the beginning.

1-Don't wash your hair everyday! Every other day is o.k. but every third day is best. Your own natural oils will keep your hair in the healthiest shape and is the best conditioner you can use on your hair, and it doesn't cost a thing.

2-Protect your investment. Use a quality shampoo and conditioner, don't skimp here. Ask your hair colorist or hair stylist what they recommend for your hair type. We hairdressers see hair color fading twice as fast if you are using something that is cheap from the drug store and know first hand that it will fade your hair color and dry your hair out in no time.

3- Don't rip through your hair with a fine tooth comb or an old brush when it's wet. Hair is much more fragile when it's wet and more apt to break if you're not careful. It's not a surprise that you will see your hair breaking off after you spend all of 2 seconds ripping through it with a cheap or old brush. Start combing with a wide tooth comb from the bottom of your hair and work your way up. If you're hair tangles easily, use a dime size of leave in conditioner or heat protective styling lotion before you start and the comb will glide through.

Follow these three easy steps and you will begin to love your hair..........and it will love you back.

Today is Earth day. It's all about recycling and reusing, but does that mean you can only recycling "things"? I thought about this for a few days and I think that it can also include experience and knowledge. As a hair colorist and Salon owner, (Juan Juan Salons Beverly Hills and Brentwood), I go to work, do my clients and just do what I do best, hair color. I tune in and out throughout the day and never really realize how much I have in my head to pass along to my assistants who yearn to be colorists some day. I have learned a thousand, (and counting) tricks that I keep up my sleeve throughout my workdays and pull them out whenever necessary. Mindlessly, and while talking about shoes, bags and dinner parties as I'm working.

Well it took teaching a class to the color assistant team to really know how much knowledge I have about color, people and fixing anything on the fly to really appreciate the fact that I have something important to pass along to whomever may want to learn it. There were so many things that I didn't even realize that I knew how to do until I had to vocalize them to a group of students that were hungry for the information. All I can say is it was so satisfying! I love what I do and I love to teach and I am glad that I am able to contribute to Earth Day. Even if it's not something tangible I am recycling, it's still a contribution.

And then everything old becomes new again............

From yellow to HELLO..........

So last week at our Brentwood Salon, I met a new client, totally pulled together and dressed to the nines. She had it all going on, a beautiful girl with a great outfit, a Birkin Bag, an amazing short bob, and yellow hair. Wait, it's like an oxymoron, great style with yellow hair! Not o.k. at all in my book and it needed to be fixed and fast! So, today I had my work cut out for me. I was excited to make that almost perfect picture, well perfect.

With all my tricks up my sleeve and about 2 hours, this was my result. Bliss...........Hermes will thank me.........

I don't know what is in the water, but I'm telling you, I have done so many color corrections this week, I can't believe it. And on top of that, they were all brunettes that made their hair too black. I DO love correcting hair and getting that instant gratification of fixing it and making someone feel beautiful but not everyone can afford to pay Salon prices in order to get their hair back on track. So here are a few tricks that you can do at home in case you have a little "Hair Emergency".

1- Always have a clarifying shampoo at home in case your hair feels to dark or got a little green from the pool. It should only be used once in a while but is great in case you need to get that Elvira edge off of your hair.

2- Deep conditioner is also a great way to help pull a little color out of your hair if it can't handle a clarifying shampoo. You should shampoo your hair, towel dry, apply a deep conditioner and comb it through. Cover your hair with a plastic cap if you have one but don't worry if you don't, Saran wrap will work just as well. Put a towel in the dryer on high to heat it up nice and hot and wrap it around your hair for 20 minutes. This will help put the shine back into your hair as well as pulling a little color out too.

Hair Color is not a job for me, it's an obsession. I have invested a decade and a half in what I love most in the world and have been asked by many publications from Allure, Marie Claire to the New York Times about what is new in the world of hair color and what is the current trend. As we all know, trends come and go, (we all have embarrassing photos of ourselves in High School to prove this point) but what is really important to me as a Colorist? What looks good on you! Beautiful, vibrant and healthy looking hair. We can all rip a page out of a Magazine and dream about how we would love to look like 'that', but we really know in our heart it won't look the same. Do you have the same skin tone or texture? This are just a couple of questions that you need to ask yourself and that is very important in finding the right hair color. Be realistic but have a vision of where you want to go with it. This Blog is going to be the first of many in helping you find the right color, cut, products, etc. with a lot of inside information that you may not hear anywhere else. I will be sharing tips and secrets from the many years of working in a Salon to the many film sets I have worked on producing beautiful and natural looking Hair Color. Stay tuned....................
